Personality

Ode Iou is a power-hungry and chaotic megalomaniac. His goal is to become the sole ruler of Japan, keeping it engulfed in ceaseless war. Ode Iou is more than willing to sacrifice his very humanity to further his ambitions.

History

Twilight of Edo Japan: The Infiltrator

Ode Iou is one of many powerful men who seek to consolidate power in a disorganized Japan and overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate. To that end, he has forged pacts with insidious spirits and demons, placing them under his command in the fortress of the Ode clan, Ode Castle. In addition, he has organized the abduction of a revolutionary who espouses the modernization of the nation, keeping him prisoner within his castle's dungeon. With the power of Japan at his fingertips, Iou deems his reign to be inevitable.

In an effort to stop the power-hungry warlord, the Enma ninja clan deploys the young ninja Oboromaru on a mission to infiltrate Ode Castle, rescue the Prisoner, and assassinate Ode Iou. After traversing the castle grounds, facing Ode's many servants, and encountering the prisoner, Oboromaru confronts Ode Iou on the castle's fifth floor. Iou pulls a gun on the ninja and sends his royal guard after him, but the group is easily dispersed by he and the prisoner. Iou summons Miyamoto Musashi to deal with the pair as he makes his escape to the top of the castle.

Oboromaru and the prisoner give chase and corner Ode Iou in his throne room. After he fails to put up a fight against Oboromaru, the warlord requests the pair follow him to the castle's roof. As they arrive, Iou transforms before their eyes into a frog-snake demon, the Gamahebi, proclaiming all of Japan to be his. The monster bears upon the pair, but for the future of Japan, Oboromaru and the prisoner are able to slay the beast. The Gamahebi plummets off the castle roof with a plume of red smoke, ending the tyranny of the Ode.

Final Chapter: The Dominion of Hate

A statue of Ode Iou's demonic form is found in the chamber of statues inside the Archon's Roost, alongside the other incarnations of Odio. It is fought once more with only Oboromaru in the true ending route, as part of a gauntlet of every incarnation. If Oersted is selected as the protagonist, the Gamahebi is briefly playable in an alternate outcome of his climactic showdown with Oboromaru and the prisoner

Strategy

Ode Iou is an easy fight in his standard form. Depending on whether or not Oboromaru has rescued the prisoner before confronting him, Iou's attacks will differ, as the prisoner may have shot Iou's gun out of his hand. Even with his gun, though, he is very weak for such a eminent figure, and will go down from almost anything. What you should beware of is his true form.
