The Outsider (2022)

The Outsider is Akira's chapter in Live A Live and takes place in the near future.

Its completed chapter icon is of a taiyaki. Its menu color is cyan.

Chapter Description

One day soon—but not yet—a rebellious youth lives a hard life, getting into trouble and picking fights because he knows what other are thinking. A rough routine, but one to which he's grown accustomed. However, his power eventually leads him to become involved in a dark conspiracy...which can only be stopped through the resurrection of an ancient robot king: The Steel Titan!

Chapter Mechanics

Akira has the ability to read the minds of others, which allows him to get information he wouldn't get otherwise with talking to NPC's, allowing him to progress through the story. The chapter also has a small world map of sorts.

The chapter also contains numerous battles which consist of various robotic cohorts and a Crusader that controls them. Originally, if you defeat the robotic cohorts first, you can get special drops that can be refined into other equipment at Timeless Wonder Antiques, but the remake ensures that all items will drop even if the Crusader is defeated first. The refinement is simple, you just give an item to Doc Tobei and after a while he will be back with a new one. There is a small chance that he will fail, but the item is not lost upon failing.

Boss

The boss of this chapter is Odeo, the deity represented by the Great Inko statue and fueled by the mixed hatred of 60,000 liters created from the 2000 liquified humans. You fight him as the Steel Titan, which is extremely strong, so losing here is quite difficult, but possible. It is recommended to attack with Babylon Stomp and Halogen Laser (if you get Snared) until he goes down.

Chapter Endings

Bad Ending

Obtained after getting a game over at any point. The screen will fade to Kaori's room, who will wake up and exclaim "Brother... Brother!", knowing that Akira has failed.

Bad Ending: The Steel Titan

Obtained after getting a game over while controlling the Steel Titan. The screen will fade to the cockpit of the Steel Titan, where Akira apologizes to Lawless and says he's really screwed up and then falls unconscious. Lawless' ghost will then appear and call dammit to Akira and shout "You can't give up now!" in disappointment.

Normal Ending

The Steel Titan successfully defeats the Great Inko statue, shattering it into pieces. The liquified humans then proceed to attack and consume General Yamazaki, Doctor Livingstill and Priest Unryu. Akira then looks in surprise as the liquified humans also try to consume The Steel Titan. The screen fades to black and then Akira appears resting on the park and waking up to prepare taiyaki, things all go back to normal, and the chapter ends with Akira riding Lawless' bike to the harbor.

Trivia

  • The chapter was inspired by various old school mecha anime, including Go Nagai's "Mazinger Z", whose anime's theme song (1974-1975) inspired "Go! Go! Steel Titan!" song.[1]
  • During the beginning of the chapter, Yoshikazu mentions the restaurant Juliana's, which used to have a branch in Tokyo, but closed in August 31, 1994 (two days before the release of the original SFC Live A Live). The fan translation team failed to recognize the reference.
