“Inko shall descend and take possession of his graven image! He shall reveal his true face- and all will know Odeo walks among them!”
—Priest Unryu

Odeo "The Great Inko Buddha Statue" is the overarching antagonist of the Near Future chapter, The Outsider. The incarnation of Odio from Akira's time, it is an otherworldly deity beckoned to the mortal world through the sacrifice of thousands of human beings.

Profile

Appearance

The Great Inko Statue is a colossal Buddha statue, likely made in the image of a rose-ringed parakeet, a native African-Indian bird and an invasive species in Japan. It wears a long golden and chartreuse robe, and has six small wings and an ornate aureole affixed behind it.

Personality

Odeo is seen as an almighty savior by the conspirators, and it acts the part. An apparently mindless deity of pure malevolence, its only desire is to bring about the complete liquefaction of all humanity, if the praises of its followers are to be believed.

Background

During The Outsider

The Great Inko statue normally lies dormant on the grounds of Odeo Temple in Nippori. It is looked after by the temple guardian, Priest Unryu, and is usually surrounded by dozens of eerie parrots which mimic the phrase "Odeodeo...". Akira may visit the statue at any time in the chapter's first two thirds.

Unknown to the common people, the Inko Buddha statue is at the center of a conspiracy with influence in the highest echelons of society. The conspirators, including Unryu, research scientist Doctor Livingstill, and army general Yamazaki, seek to summon their god Odeo to the mortal realm, so that he may bring a complete convergence upon humanity. To that end, they organize the abduction of two thousand innocent people with the aid of the Crusaders, forcing them to undergo liquefaction, and surrounding the Inko Statue with their pooled remains, in the hopes that Odeo would descend upon them with this ritual.

Having learned of the plot, Akira takes command of the Steel Titan and pilots it to Odeo Temple, seeking to stop the madmen. Unfortunately, he is too late; with the unbridled power of thousands of human souls, Odeo is successfully summoned and takes possession of the Great Inko Buddha Statue, rendering it fully animate as the temple's parrots become part of its essence. Before it can begin its reign, Akira and the Titan bear upon it for a last stand. Battling it out on the temple grounds, the might of the Steel Titan proves supreme, and the Great Inko is completely reduced to rubble with a burst of red smoke, ridding the world of Odeo's presence once and for all.

Final Chapter: The Dominion of Hate

A smaller statue of the Inko Buddha is found in the chamber of statues inside the Archon's Roost, alongside the other incarnations of Odio. It is fought once more with the Steel Titan in the true ending route, as part of a gauntlet of every incarnation. If Oersted is selected as the chapter's protagonist, Odeo is briefly playable in an alternate outcome of his battle with Akira.

Strategy

The Great Inko is one of the easier chapter bosses, and can be easily beaten with repeated use of Marduk's Rage to lower its stats and inflict high amounts of damage. Babylon Stomp does even more damage, but can be blocked by the statue inflicting the Snare detrimental status effect.
