The Outsider (1994)

The Outsider is Akira Tadokoro's chapter in Live A Live and takes place in the near future.

Its cursor is a taiyaki.

Chapter Description

In the not-too-distant future lives a boy with the power to read other people's thoughts. His teenage years are troubled, and he gets into many fights. And yet over his shoulder silently watches a sleeping giant, the robotic Buriki Daioh.

Chapter Mechanics

Akira has the ability to read people's thoughts, which allows him to get information he wouldn't get otherwise with talking to NPC's, allowing him to progress through the story. The chapter also has a small world map of sorts.

The chapter also contains numerous battles which consist of various robotic cohorts and a Crusader that controls them. If you defeat the robotic cohorts first, you can get special drops that can be refined into other equipment at Tobei's Antique Shop. The refinement is simple, you just give an item to Tobei and after a while he will be back with a new one. There is a small chance that he will fail, but the item is not lost upon failing. And it has a world map of sorts.

Boss

The boss of this chapter is Odeo, the deity represented by the Inko Buddha Statue and fueled by the mixed hatred of 2,000 liquified humans. You fight him as Burki Daioh, which is really strong on his own, so losing here is quite difficult, but possible. It is recommended to attack with Babylon Kick and Halogen Laser (if you get Feet disabled) until he goes down.

Endings

Bad Ending

Gotten after getting a game over at any point. The screen will fade to Kaori's room, who will wake up and exclaim "Bro!", knowing that Akira has failed.

Bad Ending: Buriki Daioh

Gotten after getting a game over while controlling Buriki Daioh. The screen will fade to the cockpit of the Buriki Daioh, where Akira apologizes to Matsu and then falls unconscious. Matsu's ghost will then appear and call Akira a bastard in disappointment.

Normal Ending

Buriki Daioh successfully defeats the Inko Buddha statue, shattering it into pieces. The liquified humans then proceed to attack and consume Yamazaki, Cindelman and Priest Unryu. Akira then looks in surprise as the liquified humans also try to consume Buriki Daioh. The screen fades to black and then Akira appears resting on the park and waking up to prepare taiyaki, things all go back to normal and the chapter ends with Akira riding Matsu's bike.

Trivia

  • The chapter was inspired by various old school mecha anime, including Go Nagai's "Getter Robo", whose anime's theme song (1974-1975) inspired "Go! Go! Buriki Daioh!" song.[1]
