Introduction

“Huh? But it is why I suffer. Why people laugh and call me names. How is that a gift?”
—Hong to the Shifu

Hong Hakka, known as Samo in Japan, is a main character and one of the protagonists in The Successor chapter. Like with Lei and Yun, Hong is one of the possible successors to the Shifu's dojo and his Earthen Heart kung fu master. He represents the martial arts of the body.

Profile

Appearance

Hong is an obese, young man with shaggy brown hair. He wears a pair of black shoes, a blue vest like tunic and light brown trousers. He is also shown wearing a red cloth belt.

Personality

At first, Hong is not proud of his body. He has a lot of self-doubt for himself, but can show he is a very kind and can hold his own well in battle. Even though people look down on him, he doesn't hate or harm them. After the death of the shifu, Hong gains some confidence on his appearance and girth, but still shows the same love for food.

Background

During The Successor

Hong was originally a "dine and dasher", unable to find a job and mocked for his weight. He is first encountered at Yunfa Market, which is east of Mount Aspiration. From there, you will hear a eccentric restauranteur throwing a tantrum and chasing out Hong, who is eating everything in sight. The player, as the Shifu, either chooses him to be punished or to pay for his theft. Neither one has an effect on the game, but punishing him engages a battle. After being caught and dealt with, the Earthen Heart Shifu offered to teach him his martial arts.

By default, Hong would survive the Indomitable Fist's attack on the Master's shack. If the player trained someone else, he will die.

Before leaving, the Shifu teaches Hong his strongest technique, Heavenly Peaks Descent. Realizing where his master is going, he will join the Shifu in his quest for revenge, although it would take longer compared to the other two as he arrives right before fighting the Chun Chan Pai.

Eventually, the duo confront Ou Di Wan Lee and the Indomitable Fist's elite. The elite are defeated, but Lee sends assassins to ambush the duo. The Shifu holds off the assassins while Hong faces Lee. With the power of Heavenly Peaks Descent, Hong takes down Lee, avenging Yun and Lei. The Shifu names him the successor, before he joins his deceased students. Later on, Hong breaks the boulder that the Shifu earlier failed to, proving himself a successful new Earthen Heart Master.

During The Dominion of Hate

If Hong is the Earthen Heart Master, he will be sent to the Middle Ages by Odio, being warped to the summit of the Last Hero's Grave in front of the hero's tombstone, where the party can find the Brion. If he isn't selected as the main protagonist for the final chapter, he grows hungry and faint (presumably from being suddenly teleported), but after being fed enough food to get him back up, he will join the protagonist with no further delay. Regardless, he will be a part of the group as they work toward finding the Lord of Dark to defeat him and return to their own time periods.

After defeating Odio and freeing Oersted from his own hate, if Hong is the protagonist, he will comment on how despite all the people who hurt him, he would never hurt them back. After being sent home, the ending of the remake reveals he has started a class, training more students in the Earthen Heart.

Bad Endings

If Oersted is executed after defeating Purity of Odio, Hong wonders if something's gone wrong. Since Oersted was killed too early, the Lord of Dark's hatred is free to continue the cycle, and Hong along with the other six heroes are presumably trapped in Lucrece.

Trivia

  • Hong's name and appearance based off of Sammo Hung, an actor and martial artist known for his movies where he usually plays the role of an overweight character with great fighting skills.
  • Choosing Hong as your disciple will show the Watanabe scene of this chapter.
  • In the original version of the game, Hong's battle sprite is shown shirtless, while his field and official artwork shows him wearing his blue vest.
  • He has two unique field sprites. One of him eating and one of him without his rice bowl.
  • All of his non-Earthen Heart skills are named after Chinese cuisine.
