Trial of Power
“The Trial of Power demands warriors. The strong alone may pass. Now prove your worth!”
—Apophisphilo
The Trial of Power is one of the seven Trials found in the final chapter, The Dominion of Hate. Situated in the Silent Wood just to the right of the boundary of the Last Hero's Grave, it is guarded by a fearsome demon who emerges for none but the mightiest of warriors; namely, Masaru Takahara.
What at first appears to be a lifeless cavern belies a nonstop gauntlet, fit to overwhelm all fighters who are not prepared. The Champion's Wraps, Masaru's ultimate weapon, await at the dungeon's peak, and will be quite useful within.
Appearance
The Trial of Power is a lengthy, winding, cavern of turquoise stone. The rock formations of the walls and columns slither downward in strands, resembling vines. Large patches of moss spread across the floor, and beams of sunlight break through the ceiling, further decorating the ground.
Overview
Boss: Apophisphilo
To gain entry to the trial, its infernal guardian Apophisphilo must be slain. Apophisphilo only appears when Masaru is in the party. Insisting that only the strongest have a place inside, it attacks the heroes to test their might. After Apophisphilo is beaten, the entrance to the trial is opened permanently.
Interior
The trial proper, at first, is nothing more than a straight path to end of the cavern. The most notable oddity is the lack of any enemy encounters; the party is able to make their way up the cave with impunity. Plentiful treasure chests litter the path's offshoots, but each one is sealed with a mysterious power, and are unable to be opened. There is little to do besides making one's way to the chamber at the very top, which holds the Champion's Wraps.
After obtaining the Wraps, the torches surrounding the pedestal spontaneously burst into flame, and the seals placed upon the trial dissipate. From here, enemy encounters are not only reinstated, but are far more frequent than any other location in the Dominion of Hate. There is no exit portal to warp back to the entrance; in order to escape, the party must backtrack through the cavern on foot, facing hordes of enemies along the way. The previously locked treasure chests are now free to be opened, but with every treasure chest being slightly off the beaten path, going after them will only incite more battles.
Once the heroes return to the cave's entrance, the hordes of enemies will cease their pursuit, and the trial is considered complete.
