“Have you enjoyed playing with my many puppets and contraptions? They're not all traps, you know! Take this beautifully crafted body of mine, for instance. A work to rival god's own, if I do say so myself! ”
—Puppetmaster Gennai

Puppetmaster Gennai is an antagonist from the Twilight of Edo Japan chapter, The Infiltrator. He is a clockwork man who oversees all the traps in Ode Castle.

Profile

Appearance

He wears simple golden and green robes. He has two gears around his mechanical arms and he has a big mechanism on his back. His brain is fully visible, and he has pale skin. He has a small white goatee beard.

History

Twilight of Edo Japan: The Infiltrator

Puppetmaster Gennai was recruited by Ode Iou to set and control the various mechanical traps of his castle, from rolling gears to trap doors to sentry automatons, keeping the castle so secure that not even a rat could ascend to the top floor. With the abduction of the prisoner, Gennai plans to flay the man and outfit his skin with a robotic endoskeleton.

Gennai resides in his personal tea room on the castle's fourth floor. As Oboromaru approaches, Gennai, hidden behind a wall, attempts to trick the ninja into sitting on the nearby placemat for a cup of tea. If Oboromaru steps on the mat, he will fall all the way down to the castle's dungeon. Oboromaru must speak to Gennai repeatedly from the other room, even as Gennai facetiously disables the trap. Gennai will soon emerge from his hiding spot and do battle with Oboromaru. Once defeated, his mechanical body will malfunction and, as he begs for help, goes up in an explosion. With his death, all the traps and mechanisms in the castle are permanently disabled.

Puppetmaster Gennai is a required fight for the chapter. Should Oboromaru attempt to take Yodogimi's path to the fifth floor, the way up will be blocked by another trap, forcing him to fight Gennai to disable it.

Strategy

When the fight starts, Gennai will have six Electrodes with him. If you defeat Gennai, the Electrodes will Break Down. The easiest way to defeat the puppetmaster is by staying close to him, as he will only use his weakest attack, Mechanical Piece.

Gennai also carries with him the Mainspring, which is necessary to recruit the Mimic Mammet. He will only drop the Mainspring if all his Electrodes are defeated before him. To accommodate this, try to stay away from the Electrodes while attacking with long range techniques such as Shuriken Barrage. After the Electrodes are scrapped, Gennai may be dealt with as normal.
