“Warp speed! ”
—Kirk's catchphrase

Kirk Wells is a character from the Distant Future chapter, The Mechanical Heart. He is a a crew member of the Cogito Ergo Sum, serving as the ship's helmsman.

Profile

Appearance

Kirk wears white boots, a dark green uniform along with some harnesses and a belt. He has short blonde hair.

Personality

Kirk is a confident, stubborn, and somewhat thoughtless man. Of the crew members of the Cogito Ergo Sum, he is the most willing to take action to solve a problem. This confidence is reflected in his self-appointed catchphrase "Warp speed!", a concept he held interest in. Being Rachel's lover, he cares about her most out of all. While he treats most other members of the crew with little real respect, he is very rude towards Huey, frequently bullying him over his perceived cowardice, while at the same time being infuriated by his passive responses.

History

Distant Future: The Mechanical Heart

Prior to the chapter's start, Kirk began dating Rachel, who broke up with Huey in favor of him.

Kirk is first seen as Cube awakens him from cryosleep. He spends most of the post-awakening briefing playing Captain Square in the recreation room, which he allows Cube to try out. As he goes about the ship, Cube observes Kirk's closeness with Rachel, and his bitter relationship with Huey, at one point initiating a physical altercation in the airlock bay.

When the ship's communications antenna inexplicably shuts down, Kirk volunteers to exit the shuttle to inspect it. As he and Kato embark on their spacewalk, Kirk's spacesuit suffers from an unexpected malfunction, and he is suffocated inside of it. The others bring him to the medical bay and attempt to resuscitate him, but nothing can be done; Kirk dies on the table, the first on the Cogito Ergo Sum to be seen dead.

After his death, Kirk's corpse is abducted by Rachel, who, refusing to accept his death, pretends him to still be alive. Though it seems Kirk somehow sends Rachel a message after his death, this was in reality OD-10, manipulating Rachel to open the airlock doors. By the foot of Kirk's bed, Cube may obtain the memory card, allowing him to save his place in Captain Square.

As noted in the debriefing, Kirk's remains were secured following the Cogito Ergo Sum's return.
