“I'm sorry you had to see that. People are... a bit more complicated than machines, don't you think? ”
—Huey, to Cube

Huey Trumbull is a character from the Distant Future chapter, The Mechanical Heart. He is a a crew member of the Cogito Ergo Sum, serving as chief mate and head of cargo.

Profile

Appearance

Huey wears white boots, a brown uniform along with some harnesses and a belt. He has dark skin and long black hair that is tied as a ponytail.

Personality

Huey is a sober and supportive person, and perhaps the most well-spoken member of the ship's crew. Though he is often muted and reticent, he has a self-professed spirit of adventure, enjoying books on the adventurous past of the people of Earth and aspiring to become the captain of his own ship. He has an overall frosty relationship with his coworkers; while he and Kato get along professionally, he harbors unreciprocated affection towards Rachel, and he views Kirk with contempt for his constant bullying.

Background

The Distant Future: The Mechanical Heart

Being the ship's chief mate, Huey is skilled in various areas, such as cargo handling, communications and medicine, as he is the one who operates the medical bay. In the past, Huey was in a romantic relationship with fellow crewmate Rachel. Prior to the chapter's events, Rachel broke up with him in favor of Kirk.

Huey is first seen as Cube wakes up the crew from cryosleep. As Cube prods him awake, he assumes him to be Kirk, before throwing himself against the wall in fright of Cube. As he goes about his duties, making a brief visit with Kato to the cargo hold to observe the Behemoth, and overseeing Kato and Kirk's repair of the communications antenna, Huey's mutually bitter relationship with Kirk is on full display for Cube; Huey is regularly taunted by Kirk, and at one point physically assaulted by him, only responding, if at all, with passive-aggressive condescension.

When Kirk is killed by faulty equipment, Huey is accused by Rachel of killing him in an attempt to get her back. When Rachel flees to protect "Kirk" from the rampaging Behemoth, Huey chases after her, when the pair are attacked by the beast. Sacrificing his life for Rachel, Huey takes the more severe mauling and apparently drives the Behemoth away. As the others locate him, Huey weakly confesses his love for Rachel, and dies from his wounds. Unfortunately, Huey's sacrifice would come to be in vain, as Rachel would lose her life soon after.

On the log terminal in his quarters, there is a journal entry by Huey, reading that he was anticipating his results on an exam to attain the right to captain a vessel of his own. He intended to tell the rest of the crew upon their arrival on Earth. The terminal also contained a communication addressed to Huey from the board, stating that he had failed the exam, and would not be allowed an appeal.

As noted in the debriefing, Huey's remains were secured following the Cogito Ergo Sum's return.
