History

The Middle Ages: The Lord of Dark

Twenty years before the chapter's start, the King's wife, the Queen of Lucrece, was abducted by the Lord of Dark, later to be saved by the heroes Hasshe and Uranus. Overjoyed, the King celebrated Hasshe, and proclaimed him the hero of Lucrece. Even after Hasshe turned his back on the kingdom and vanished, the King yet regarded the former hunter as a hero without peer.

To honor the anniversary of the Lord of Dark's defeat, the King organizes a combat tournament, challenging warriors from all across Lucrece to prove their worth. In the final round of the tournament, the King earnestly commends the finalists Oersted and Streibough on their strength, offering the victor the hand of Alethea in marriage. Upon Oersted's victory, the King eagerly congratulates the knight, organizing a celebration in his success. So grateful is he that he celebrates unabashedly throughout the night, welcoming all subjects of the kingdom into the festivities.

When Alethea is abducted by the returned Lord of Dark that very night, however, the King is instantly despaired. He is remade jubilant when Oersted volunteers to rescue her; he gives the knight his blessing and states his pride to have such an honorable warrior as his heir. Unfortunately; his joy was not to last; when Oersted, accompanied by Uranus, returns to the king from his quest, he does so with allies deceased and princess unfound. The king is heartbroken at the loss, but graciously allows the pair to rest in the castle's western chambers.

That night, however, the Castle of Lucrece is infiltrated by a new Lord of Dark, seeking revenge on those who had shamed him. Placed under a sinister trick, the King is made to resemble the shadowed figure of the Lord himself. Oersted is then lured into the throne room and, upon mistaking the illusion for the real fiend, misguidedly slashes the king through the heart, killing him instantly.

The death of the king would mark the beginning of the end for the kingdom. On finding the king's corpse, the people of Lucrece would accuse Oersted of being the Lord of Dark, vilifying and shunning him, leading to his transformation into Odio.

Final Chapter: The Dominion of Hate

The King's spirit can be found in the Trial of Heart in the final chapter. He is the only soul in the Trial to think not of Oersted, instead choosing to grieve the demise of his kingdom, placing the burden on himself.
