The Successor
The Successor is the Earthen Heart Shifu's chapter in Live A Live and takes place in Imperial China.
Its completed chapter icon is of a giant panda. Its menu color is lime green.
Chapter Description
An old Chinese master nearing the end of his life yearns to preserve his kung fu for future generations. With this purpose does he venture forth from his home atop Mount Aspiration in search of a worthy successor to his legacy. Once he has gathered three disciples, he will subject them to relentless training to strengthen the body, enhance the reflexes, and unlock true potential. Of these three, who will rise to the occasion and become the next shifu?
Chapter Mechanics
This chapter plays out much like a normal RPG game only that the enemies are visible on the map so battles can be avoided if the player chooses so. What makes the chapter unique is the gathering of three disciples in any order: Lei Kugo, Hong Hakka and Yun Jou.
After the three disciples are recruited, the game will cover three training sessions between the Shifu and his students. During each of these sessions, the Shifu will have up to four sparring sessions to divide between the students as he chooses. Each sparring session will grant the disciple experience, allowing them to grow in level. Each of the three has their own strengths, weaknesses, and techniques.
Which student the Shifu favors the most will affect the outcome of the chapter. Therefore, it is recommended that the player focus all of their training sessions on their disciple of their choice in order to maximize that student's growth potential during the course of the chapter. In doing so, the disciple should end the chapter having learned all of the Shifu's techniques and will have grown significantly stronger than the Shifu stats-wise, as well.
Disciples and Attributes
- Lei Kugo - Found in the Bamboo Forest, Lei has an excellent Speed stat and balanced stats in all other fields which allow her to excel in battle with quick skill charge times and movement.
- Hong Hakka - Found in Yunfa Market, Hong has very high Physical Attack, Physical Defense, and HP stats. However, he falls short in Speed and both Special Attack and Defense. He excels in tanking hits and attacking with raw power despite his low speed.
- Yun Jou - Found in Wong Village, he has a very slow start being the weakest of the three except that he has a very high Special Attack Stat. After leveling up, he can catch up and surpass the other disciples. He excels in technique power and elements, as he gets a variety of techniques that scale off of his high Special Attack.
Boss
The boss of this chapter is Ou Di Wan Lee. He is the leader of a rival school and a master of a form of kung fu known as Indomitable Fist. He is faced by the surviving disciple, who can defeat him with the use of the ultimate Earthen Heart technique, Heavenly Peaks Descent, followed up by whatever attacks the disciple has at their disposal. Heavenly Peaks Descent can only be used once during the battle.
Chapter Endings
Bad Ending: Before obtaining disciples
Obtained after getting a game over before getting disciples or before the attack at the Earthen Heart Shifu's Cottage. The screen will then cut to the summit of the mountain where a gravestone will appear, representing that the Shifu has died.
Bad Ending: After obtaining disciples
Obtained after getting a game over after the attack at the Earthen Heart Shifu's Cottage. The screen will then cut to the summit of the mountain, where four gravestones will appear, representing the deaths of the Shifu and his three disciples.
Normal Ending
The only other ending to this chapter. After defeating Ou Di Wan Lee, the old shifu will pass away to the afterlife to deliver the message of how his successor has grown to the others that have died. The screen will then cut to the summit of the mountain, in which the new Earthen Heart master will split the rock. The ending credits change depending on which disciple has survived.
