The Wanderer (1994)

The Wanderer is Sundown's chapter in Live A Live and takes place in the wild west.

Its cursor is a revolver.

Chapter Description

In a time when the West was wild and criminals were many, a haggard traveler with a price on his head wanders into Success Town, the recent target of a notorious outlaw gang. Work quickly to set traps and take down the Crazy Bunch!

Chapter Mechanics

This chapter is very light on combat, as the main mechanic is based on finding traps that the villagers can set around as a timer of eight bells counts down.

Moving faster in this chapter is key, as it allows the player to get more traps that the villagers can set. To set the traps after getting them, the player must give the found items to the various townspeople inside the Crystal Saloon and have them set them.

For each person, the time it takes to set a trap varies. Some are fast enough to set various traps, while others are so slow that can't even set one. Annie and Billy both have exclusive traps that only they can set: the Frying Pan and the Slingshot respectively. When you find an Empty Bottle and Oil you get the option to craft Bottled Fire (Cocktail Molotov in the original) which takes some time to do so. They can be used in battle or as a trap.

The player has to both find the traps and have the townsfolk set them down in the span of the eight bells. Once the eighth bell rings, O. Dio will show up. The more traps that were set, the less gang members he will have. Fighting him along with his 14 goons is possible, although moderately difficult.

Trap Items

  • Coal Tar - Triples the time between the seventh and eighth bells
  • Dynamite - Explodes and defeats 4 brothers
  • Molotov Cocktail - Explodes and defeats 2 brothers
  • Rope - Trips the Duo de Chico horses and defeats them
  • Carrot - Knocks a brother out of their horse and defeats 1 brother
  • Barman's Poster - Tricks and defeats 1 brother
  • Shovel - Creates a pit that defeats 1 brother
  • Horse Dung - Creates a second pit when used with the Shovel that defeats 1 brother
  • Slingshot - Can only be set up by Billy, defeats 1 brother
  • Frying Pan - Can only be set up by Annie, defeats 1 brother

Trap Setting Speed

The following is a list of the citizens inside the saloon, detailing their trap setup speed from fastest to slowest:

  1. Sheriff
  2. Annie
  3. Barkeep
  4. Gene
  5. Dallas
  6. Wayne
  7. Clint
  8. Sancho
  9. Pancho
  10. Billy
  11. Cesar
  12. Delos

Cesar, named Gibson in some fan translations, is the slowest of all, it would be best to leave him to rest. Delos' speed is randomized; he may either be slower than Gibson, or faster than the Barkeep.

Secrets

  • You can get Annie's Nightie, a joke armor item that only gives +2 DEF, by sending Annie to set up a trap. While she is setting the trap, you can get inside her room and check her closet without her interrupting.
    • Furthermore, you can give the item back to Annie when she returns, resulting in a scene where she scolds and slaps Sundown.
  • If there are many Crazy Bunch members, before the fight begins, Billy will ask us if we will win. By answering "..." , a small scene will play out in which Mad Dog will not show up to the fight, causing the Sheriff to try to assist Sundown instead. However, Mad Dog appears anyway saying that he was planning to let Sundown die here, but changed his mind because that would mean the Crazy Bunch would get the reward for his head.

Boss

The boss of this scenario is O. Dio . He is the leader of the Crazy Bunch . He is not very hard to defeat, but care should be taken when facing him as you can battle him with up to 14 members of the Crazy Bunch depending on how many traps you've set. It is best not to stand diagonal to him, as he will use an attack called Gatling Shots which will deal 999 damage upon contact.

There are three possibilities for the amount of enemies faced in this battle.

  • Set traps and kill ALL of O. Dio's minions.
  • Sets a few traps, and have only a couple of minions assist O. Dio
  • Set no traps and battle O. Dio and the Crazy Bunch.

The first method makes it easier against O. Dio, while the last method is difficult, as it means dealing with more enemies. However, fighting with a full Crazy Bunch means that O. Dio won't be able to reach the player easily.

Defeating the gang members

Each trap can defeat a certain number of members. You will end up with a "Trap Point" value depending on how many traps you've set. The amount and type of gang members defeated is related to this value. For example, if one were to set a Dynamite (Defeats 4) and a Bottled Fire (Defeats 2), you would end up with a "Trap Point" value of 6, meaning that you would defeat 3 Pike Brothers and 3 Dutton Brothers.

Trap Points Members Defeated
1 Point 1x Pike Brother or 1x Dutton Brother
2 Points 1x Pike Brother and 1x Dutton Brother
3 Points 2x Pike Brother and 1x Dutton Brother
4 Points 3x Pike Brother and 1x Dutton Brother
5 Points 3x Pike Brother and 2x Dutton Brother
6 Points 3x Pike Brother and 3x Dutton Brother
7 Points 3x Pike Brother and 4x Dutton Brother
8 Points 4x Pike Brother and 4x Dutton Brother
9 Points 4x Pike Brother and 5x Dutton Brother
10 Points 5x Pike Brother and 5x Dutton Brother
11 Points 6x Pike Brother and 5x Dutton Brother
12 Points 6x Pike Brother and 6x Dutton Brother
14 Points 6x Pike Brother, 6x Dutton Brother and 2x Duo de Chico (Only possible with the Rope)

Chapter Endings

Bad End

Achieved anytime during the chapter by simply getting a game over.

Mad Dog Dead

Achieved from killing Mad Dog in his last duel with Sundown. During the ending, Sundown will not meet up with Mad Dog, he will just ride his horse through the desert continuing to wander.

Mad Dog Alive

Achieved if you choose to run away during his last duel with Sundown. During the ending as Sundown is leaving, he will meet up with Mad Dog in a similar fashion as the start of the scenario, and here it is revealed he has tamed O. Dio in horse form. He will challenge Sundown to a duel, which Mad Dog quickly loses. After Sundown shoots his reins again, as he did at the start, he rides off as Mad Dog gives chase to O. Dio This ending also changes the final Good ending of the game. Take care, as it is still possible to lose this duel, resulting in reloading at the last save point.

Trivia

  • The plot of this scenario was likely based off of The Magnificent Seven (1960) movie, which was famous in Japan due to being a western adaptation of the movie Seven Samurai by the renowned Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa.
    • The plot of both movies could be reduced to a group of strangers being hired to defend a village from raiders by teaching the villagers to defend themselves.
    • In "Live A Live Complete Strategy Guidebook", it was stated that the chapter was based on "Shane" (1953). A movie featuring a wandering laconic protagonist who ends up helping the settlers with taking down the harassing rogues.
